Yankees Make History with New Female Coach

The New York Yankees are the first MLB organization to hire a full-time female hitting coach.

Rachel Balkovec has two Masters degrees in human movement science. She brings data driven development like ball spin, eye-tracking and swing mechanics.

Yankees hitting coordinator Dylan Lawson told CBS News he wanted Balkovec on his team after seeing her as a Minor League strength coach for the Astros, saying “she’s overqualified for every job she’s ever had.”

Balkovec says every obstacle she has faced as a woman in sports has led to wonderful opportunities.

After one MLB coach told her they couldn’t hire her because she was a woman, Balkovec created a “gender neutral” resume that caught the attention of St. Louis in 2014, also making her the first female MLB strength coach.
