It looks like the revamped XFL might be over and done with after less than one full season.
On Friday, the league suspended day-to-day operations and laid off all employees.
The Vince McMahon-owned league had cancelled the remainder of its inaugural season on March 12th, five weeks into its 10-week regular season. At the time, the league said it was “committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years”.
The XFL had found some success before the pandemic, with games on Fox, ESPN, and ABC averaging 2 million viewers and live crowds averaging over 18,000.
It was reported that Vince McMahon sold at least 100 mil of his WWE stock to rebirth the XFL.
With the uncertainty of the Coronavirus, the XFL has no plans to return in 2021.
Now that the XFL and AAF have both folded after less than one season, how long will it be before another league tries to challenge the NFL? Would the XFL have succeeded if not for the coronavirus outbreak?
