The National Guard has been activated as protests are currently taking place in Louisville, Kentucky, hours after former police officer Brett Hankison was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment in last spring’s death of Breonna Taylor at her home.
Kentucky law states, “A person is guilty of wanton endangerment in the first degree when, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, he wantonly engages in conduct which creates a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to another person.”
Neither Hankison nor either of the two other officers, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Det. Myles Cosgrov, who were involved in the shooting have been charged with killing Taylor.
The 26-year-old EMT and aspiring nurse died after 10 shots were fired into her home during a botched raid on March 13.
Officers were attempting to search the home for drugs or cash from drug trafficking as part of an investigation into Taylor’s ex-boyfriend.
