A day after Sunday’s horrific crash at the Daytona 500, doctors say driver Ryan Newman remains in critical condition in a Florida hospital.
However, doctors now say his injuries aren’t considered to be life-threatening.
That’s according to a statement released by Rousch Fenway Racing, the team behind the Number Six Ford that Newman was driving when the crash occurred.
The 19-year NASCAR veteran had been in the lead during Sunday’s annual race when he was bumped from behind, causing him to crash into the wall.
Another car then smashed into the driver’s side of Newman’s vehicle, sending it into the air before it landed on the ground, upside-down, and burst into flames.
Denny Hamlin, who ended up winning the race, says he’s having a difficult time celebrating his victory in the wake of Newman’s accident. “The finish, the history, that’s all great,” he says. “One day it will all sink in. But right now all I’m thinking about is Ryan Newman.”
The hashtag PrayforRyan has been trending on Twitter since last night. Those who tweeted support included many celebrities and even the President.
Do you think Newman will ever race again?
