Rob Manfred Apologizes For Calling Trophy A ‘Piece Of Metal’

World Series Trophy

Rob Manfred has caught the ire of baseball fans after the MLB commissioner referred to the World Series Trophy as just a “piece of metal.”

On Tuesday, Manfred walked back Sunday’s “disrespectful” statement made to ESPN.

“There’s no excuse for it. I made a mistake. I was trying to make a point, but I should’ve made it in a more effective way. And again, I want to apologize for it,” he told reporters in Scottsdale, Arizona.

While discussing calls to strip the Astros of their 2017 title for cheating, Manfred said, “The idea of an asterisk or asking for a piece of metal back seems like a futile act.”

Putting aside the disrespect, does Manfred have a point about further punishing the Astros? Or do you think more needs to be done?
