Red Sox Defeat Rays In 13-Inning Thriller, One Win Away From Pennant

The Red Sox took a 2-1 series lead over the Rays on Sunday – thanks to some extra-inning heroics from Christian Vazquez and a controversial decision by the umpires.

In the top of the 13th with Yandy Diaz on first and the score tied 4-4, the Rays’ Kevin Kiermaier ripped a ball into right field that deflected off outfielder Hunter Renfroe and over the fence.

After discussing the play, the umpires ruled it a ground-rule double, taking a run off the board and forcing Diaz to return to third base.  Vazquez hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 13th to win it for the Sox.

Crew chief Sam Holbrook says the call was “textbook” according to the rules because Renfroe did not intentionally deflect the ball out of play.

The Rays are now facing elimination heading into Game 4 tonight.
