Nationwide CDC Eviction Ban Takes Over as Florida’s Policy Expires

State officials have a message for those who are concerned about the latest executive order on halting evictions and foreclosures not being renewed: Don’t worry.

That’s because even though Gov. Ron DeSantis is allowing his order (20-180) to expire at 12:01 a.m. Thursday without another extension, a nationwide order stopping such actions through the end of the year will continue.

DeSantis had extended the ban at the end of August for the fifth time since the pandemic began.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued its own nationwide eviction ban through December 31.

This time around, DeSantis says there’s no longer a need for the state to have its own policy, as it could create confusion with the one from the CDC.

It is unknown whether the national ban could be extended beyond the end of this year.
