Spring Owls football action got underway in Boca on Saturday, as the Red team, led by Coach Lane Kiffin’s father, defensive assistant Monte Kiffin, captured a 17-16 win.
Walk-on Christian Hoyos missed a 44-yard attempt for the Gray team at the end of regulation play, giving the game to the Red team.
Tight end Harrison Bryant scored two touchdowns for his team, as did redshirt wide receiver John Mitchell for the other side, including a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:42 remaining in the game.
However, quarterback Justin Agner was brought down at the two-point conversion. That led to Hoyos’ failed kick to end the game.
Lane Kiffin said, “Whenever you’re playing yourself, there’s a good and bad to everything. It was good in the second half to see the offense make some plays, especially John Mitchell.”
According to the elder Kiffin, “It was a lot of fun for me to be on the sidelines again and be involved in defensive game planning. I enjoy doing it. I enjoy watching young players get better. I just really do. That’s why I come to work every morning.”
The Owls will practice this Tuesday and Thursday before wrapping up their spring camp with a scrimmage at FAU Stadium this Saturday.
