Free-agent outfielder Yasiel Puig and the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a one-year deal pending a physical. The agreement helps the Braves address a depth problem in their outfield and helps the 29-year-old Puig at the same time since Veteran Nick Markakis opted out of the season before summer camp. Puig was the last “Big Name” free-agent from the off-season who had not signed with a team. The Atlanta Braves is getting a normal Yasiel Puig for this 60-game season not the Yasiel Puig who set the baseball world on fire with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 6 seasons under “Puig-Mania”. A major league All-Star in 2014, Puig batted .267 in 149 games last season with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. He hit .297 with Cleveland after being acquired on July 30th. He gave an infusion of power and energy that helped the Indians catch the Minnesota Twins for the American League Central title. If Puig is healthy, we could see him join Acuna in CF with Puig in RF and Duvall in LF against LHP… and Puig in LF with Inciarte in RF and Acuna in CF against RHP while Marcel Ozuna could be the primary designated hitter in this 2020 short season.
Dodgers and Indians and Reds, oh my… Puig will be a Brave in 2020.
