Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the start of high school sports across Florida’s 67 counties has been pushed back until Sept. 4 by the Florida High School Athletic Association following a vote on Friday.
The first practice date for high schools will be August 24 and the last regular season game for football will be Nov. 6.
Other high school sports will run as late as Oct. 24 followed by tournaments and finals.
“Our governor and our commissioner of education are insistent that our schools reopen,” FHSAA Executive Director George Tomyn told board members in Tallahassee according to WPTV NewsChannel 5. “And our governor and our commissioner of education know that extracurricular activities and athletic activities are part of that school opening.”
Palm Beach County schools are expected to open for classes on Aug. 31.
