Florida Atlantic Head Coach Dusty May said that he and his team wouldn’t take any competition lightly including Div.2 Flagler College.
However, for most of the second half, the Owls gave the Saints a heartbeat and the confidence that they could play with anybody. Flagler was able to cut the Owls lead down to 5 points with 7 minutes remaining, but The Owls pulled away as Cornelius Taylor capped off a strong 4th quarter and added 20 points in the Owls 92-81 victory.
Sophmore guard Gedi Juozapaitis did his best Steph Curry impersonation by scorching the Owls defense for 24 points, 11 rebounds on 7/15 shooting.
Florida Atlantic built a 21-point halftime lead and maintained a double-digit lead until Logan Swackhammer’s layup with 5:03 left made it 81-73. Juozapaitis then sank three consecutive free throws – after being fouled on a 3-point shot attempt by Taylor – and reduced the Saints’ deficit to 82-77. Taylor hit a late 3 with 2:30 left to extend the Owls lead and close out the game.
Forward Karlis Silins had 13 points for the Owls and Michael Forrest scored 12 points.
The Owls will have to improve their transition defense and 21 turnovers vs Flagler as they prepare to face the Miami Hurricanes on Friday at 7pm with pregame starting at 6:30pm.
