Jim Leavtt’s new look 3-4 defense shined brightest once again as FAU defeated UTSA 24-3. Roadrunners QB Frank Harris faced pressure all game long as Florida Atlantic’s defense dropped him 7 times in the game. Jaylen Joyner will be looking at conference player of the week honors as he corralled 3 sacks in the game. However, it was new faces on the defense like OLB Chris Jones and DL Alvin Dempsey that also combined for 3 sacks in the Owls victory.
FAU allowed a season-low 3 points on defense in their first Conference USA win of the season.
The Florida Atlantic offense had a dynamic rushing attack as RB Malcolm Davidson finished the game with 115 yards on 14 carries. The Owls were able to cash in on 2 short-yardage TD runs by QB Nick Tronti and RB James Charles.
Tronti was a victim of some drops by his wide receivers but will have to improve his passing vs Western Kentucky as the junior finished 11/19 for 136 yards and a 27 yard TD pass to Clemson transfer WR TJ Young.
FAU will look to improve to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in Conference USA play as the Owls host Western Kentucky next Saturday 11/7 at 6:00 PM. It will be the second time in Willie Taggart’s coaching history that he will face his alma mater. Taggart was a star QB for the Hilltoppers from 1995-1998.
Congrats, Owls Nation and we’ll see you for pregame at 5 pm next Saturday!
